Laptop Tips
Conserving Power
- When you are not actively using the Internet, turn off or remove your wireless card.
- When you are finished using your system, power it off completely.
- If you just close the lid, your computer will 'hibernate.' This means that your system will power up very quickly the next time you use it, but the computer will constantly be drawing a small amount of power from the battery during the 'hibernation.'
- If you put your system into 'suspend', this powers your system off for the most part, but if you leave your system like this for long periods of time your battery will be drained.
- It is important that you recharge your battery every night.
Note: If you are using an extension cord in class, it cannot go outside of your classroom. Also do not have the extension cord across any high traffic areas.

Security
The Crime Prevention Office of the UT Police Department will engrave a student's Driver's License onto their laptop to enhance the potential to trace a stolen laptop back to the owner. Students can call 974-3114 (Crime Prevention Office) and ask for Sgt. Busico to set up an engraving appointment where they will bring in their laptop to the Police Department at 1101 Cumberland Drive.
It is our recommendation that you secure your laptop in a bag that you can lock. It is also a good idea not to leave your bag unattended. Also write down your serial number of your laptop and write down the MAC address of your wireless card. Your MAC address will be in the email you receive after you register on the network
