Laptop Setup Guide - For Macintosh Users

It is mandatory that you purchase your laptop and go through this setup guide prior to your first day of class.  You will begin using your laptop immediately so it is essential that you are prepared when classes begin.

Password Since UT does not have a strong firewall policy, it is strongly suggested that you create a password for your user account
Windows Compatibility Software

You must install Bootcamp, Parallels OR VMWare Fusion which will allow you to run Windows software on your Macintosh.   See information below for information on obtaining and installing ONLY ONE of these packages:
Bootcamp -- comes as part of the Mac OS. Requires that your system be rebooted into the Windows partition. Setup instructions available at: How to Install Bootcamp.
Parallels -- separate purchase from UT Computer Store. Allows you to switch from the Mac side to the Windows side without rebooting your system. Setup instructions available at: How to Install Parallels on a Mac
VMWare Fusion -- separate purchase from UT Computer Store. Allows you to switch from the Mac side to the Windows side without rebooting your system. Setup instructions available at: How to Install VMWare Fusion.

Antivirus Antivirus Software - Install Microsoft Security Essentials on the Windows partition and ClamAV on the  Macintosh partition
Spyware Removal Tools for the Windows partition

Spybot (Choose the free version)
Adaware (Choose the free version)
Malware Bytes (Choose the free version)
Windows 7 Purchase from the UT Computer Store. Must be installed under the Bootcamp/Parallels/VMWare partition (whichever you chose).  You should purchase Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Business, Enterprise or Ultimate.  We strongly suggest that you have a Windows password.   Click here if you need assistance in creating a Windows password.
Updates Windows updates
Office 365 University (Windows version of Office) Must be installed under the Bootcamp/Parallels/VMWare partition (whichever you chose). Because the MBA curriculum uses Microsoft Access and some Excel macros, you must use this version of Microsoft Office. Microsoft Access is not available in the Office suite for the Macintosh and some Excel macros will not work as well. You may purchase this from teh UC Computer Store for $79.
Please note: Once you have purchased your software, the UT Computer Store will install Bootcamp/Parallels/VMWare (your choice), Windows 7, Security Essentials Antivirus, Windows updates, Spyware/Adaware, and Office 365 for a fee. Please contact them by either visiting the store or calling 974-2930 if you wish to have them do this for you.

The following software must also be installed on your computer prior to your arrival on campus. You may choose whether you want to install it on the Macintosh partition or the Windows partition.
Adobe Acrobat Reader Go to Adobe website. Click here.
JMP (MBA and Executive Programs Only) Obtaining JMP. Login with your netid and netid password. Click on SAS, then choose JMP pro 10.0 for either Windows or Mac.
