1. Getting Help

Technology Integration Services (TIS) supports the configuration, ordering and installation of hardware and software and facilitates the management of technical equipment. These technical support services take advantage of the infrastructure maintained by TIS for the College of Business, by the Office of Information Technology and by Distance Education.  TIS provides support for the Haslam Business Building classrooms from the second floor up.

2. Definitions

These are terms used in this guide:

2.1 HBB: Haslam Business Building.  HBB is the new state-of-the-art business building is named after Jim Haslam, founder and chairman of the board of Pilot Travel Centers LLC and chairman of the board and president of Pilot Corp.  It is located at the corner of Andy Holt Avenue and Volunteer Boulevard on the site of the former Glocker Business Administration Building and houses 34 classrooms; more than 75 offices for faculty, staff and administration; 35 team and presentation rooms; a technology center; an investments learning center.

2.2 Instructors: Instructors are faculty members or graduate students who use the HBB technology.

2.3 Buttons: Buttons are icons that instructors select to control the podium.

2.4 Sources:  Sources are the different types equipment used to teach. The available sources include the following:

§  PC (podium pc)

§  Laptop (the instructor’s Windows or Macintosh laptop

§  DVD (the podium DVD)

§  Pod/Aux (video/audio from an IPod, IPhone or other video/audio source,

§  Tuner channels for a satellite dish

§  Doc Cam (ceiling mounted document camera)

2.5 States: States are the conditions that instructors find the podium when they enter a classroom.

There are two states:

§  systems on and

§  systems off.

The systems-off state is where the previous instructor has turned the podium off. Instructors using the podium  “first thing in the morning” should find the podium in the systems-off state.

The systems-on state is where a previous instructor has left the podium on. Note that Windows XP in the podium is always left on.

2.6 Stationary control bars:  Stationary control bars are stationary panels with buttons that are displayed on the top part of the podium screen.

There are two stationary control bars, depending on the state of the podium:

§  AV Quick Start control bar

§  Sources control bar

Instructors see the AV Quick Start control bar (below) if they approach the podium in a systems-off state.

 

Instructors see the Sources control bar (below) if they approach the podium in a systems-off state.

2.7 Fly-out control bars: fly-out control bars are temporary control bars that appear (fly out) and disappear (fly in) when instructors select buttons on the stationary control bars.

Below is the fly-out control bar that appears when the display button is selected.

2 .8 Teaching modes: Teaching modes are ways that instructors teach using the podium sources. A common teaching mode is to use the podium PC to view PowerPoint slides stored on the instructor’s USB flash drive.

A recommended dual-source teaching mode is to use the podium PC to view PowerPoint slides and to view company reports using the Doc Cam.

2.9 Technology Integration Services (TIS): Technology Integration Services provides infrastructure, customer service and web application support to the faculty, staff, students and units of the College of Business. Its focus is to facilitate the use of the campus technology infrastructure and support while adding complementary infrastructure and services to meet the unique needs of the College.

2.10 Blackboard: Blackboard Academic Suite is a comprehensive course management system used at the University of Tennessee.
