Technology Initiatives in the College of Business

The College of Business administration has established the requirement for laptop computers for students in the new undergraduate curriculum. The implementation of that policy has been viewed as an opportunity to enhance and extend a student’s learning environment and support both inside and outside of the classroom. Based on previous experience with laptops in the MBA and executive MBA programs, the college has implemented web delivery of all undergraduate core classes, created a web services and communications Intranet, facilitated the purchase of laptops through the campus computer store, developed an undergraduate software setup guide, opened a student laptop support center and provided laptop technology orientation sessions. Using student technology fee funds, the college has modernized its computer lab with work spaces for laptop users, new computers and high speed/volume printersto to improve the technology infrastucture and support on the UT's main campus. These central services, provided by the Office of Information Technology, include a campus wide wireless network, technology training (both classroom and web- based), and a call- in help desk.

Students in the new curriculum can access course materials, communicate electronically, schedule advising appoints, take computer based training for technology use, print papers and submit assignments from anywhere on campus by using their laptop linked to the campus wireless network. Any classroom that a student is in potentially becomes a computer lab with a professor leading the class using a laptop and portable computer projector. The student has enhanced learning opportunities both inside and outside of the traditional classroom. The combination of an innovative new undergraduate curriculum and a technology- enhanced learning environment will add significant value to a degree from the College of Business Administration.
