Master in Statistics - Curriculum

The M.S. Program in Statistics Requires:

  • 6 hours of probability and statistical theory
  • 9 hours of applied statistics, regression and experimental design.
  • 5 (or more) elective courses
  • 2 comprehensive exams (theory and methods)
  • An independent project (or thesis).

All students are strongly encouraged to complete an internship between the first and second year. The program is applied with heavy involvement in computing. The comp exams are taken during year 2; the theory comp exam is usually taken at the beginning of the fall semester and the methods comp exam at the beginning of the spring semester.  

* Recommended Computer Systems for the College of Business
Note well to avoid Windows Vista for JMP, SAS, etc.
Stay with Windows XP at least till summer 2008.

Fall Semester, Year 1:

  • ST 563 - Statistical Inference (3)
  • ST 566 - Statistical Techniques in Industrial Processes (elective 3)
  • ST 571 - Statistical Methods (3)
  • ST 587 - Graduate Seminar (introduction to UT Statistics, resume building, internship/job hunting skills 1)


Spring Semester, Year 1:

  • ST 564 - Theory of Statistical Inference (3)
  • ST 572 - Applied Linear Models (3)
  • ST 573 - Design of Experiments (3)

* International students must apply for Practical Training Seminars before their internship.

* International students before visiting home are encouraged to get a formal letter signed by the department stating they are a student in good standing.

Summer, Year 1:


Fall Semester, Year 2:

  • ST 592 - Internship (for summer internship after completing a brief report and giving an oral presentation 1) plus choose three of the following with the formal advice of the master committee advisor:

  • BA 521 - Business Core for Master of Accountancy I (or a science elective 400-level or higher 3)

Spring Semester, Year 2:

Comprehensive Exams

STATISTICS COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION RULES

The Comprehensive Theory Exam is a four-hour close-book exam covering Stat 563 - 564 topics. It is given during the week preceding the Wednesday beginning of the Fall semester. The exam is jointly written by two faculty members and jointly graded by two faculty members.

The Comprehensive Methods Exam is a four-hour open-book exam covering Stat 572 and Stat 573 topics. (IGSP students may substitute a course for Stat 573 with the approval of the MS committee) This exam is given during the week preceding the Wednesday beginning of Fall semester. The exam is jointly written and jointly graded by two faculty members.

Both exams typically require computer work.

A score of 70% is required to pass the Theory exam and 70% is required to pass the methods exam. If a student earns less than 70% on just one part, the MS committee may give the student a Conditional Pass and specify additional work to be done to be given a passing grade, or the Graduate Committee may require the student to retake that part. If the student earns less that 70% on each part, the student must retake the exam. Normally, retakes will be scheduled for the next time the exam is offered, which is expected to be at the beginning of the following semester.

The Graduate School rules state that a student failing the comprehensive exam twice is terminated from the program.
