Based primarily upon academic merit, the
Department of Statistics awards scholarships for
study in statistics to UTK undergraduate
statistics majors. Awards up to $1000 are made
for the junior and senior years. These
scholarships are in memory of Professor David
Chambers, a long-time faculty member and a
leader in statistical quality control.
To be considered for a scholarship, the student
should do the following:
1. Request a Statistics Department faculty
member to be the student's sponsor and write a
letter of recommendation to the Chair by June 1
(for Fall semester) or by November 1 (for Spring
semester).
2. Submit to the Stat Dept. Chair by June 1 (for
Fall semester) or by November 1 (for Spring
semester) the following
-
a current transcript
(including the most recently completed
semester's grades)
-
a one-page letter that
contains 1) a statement of career goals, 2)
the name of his/her faculty sponsor, and 3)
a list of scholarships currently held and
being applied for in addition to a David
Chambers scholarship (be sure to include
your mailing address in the letter)
Scholarship awards are based primarily on
academic merit, but some monies are available
based on financial need. If you seek this
consideration, please indicate so in the letter
and furnish some information related to
financial need (such as part-time work you do,
having siblings in college, etc.).
Recipients of the scholarships will be notified
of their selection by July 1 (for Fall semester)
or by December 1 (for Spring semester).
