Marketing
By way of introduction, my name is Dan Flint and I am the Director of the Marketing Ph.D. Program at the University of Tennessee. I want to thank you for your interest in our program.
I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about our program and I invite you to explore this website. You can send me some initial information about yourself directly via e-mail. If you email me your resume and any additional information you can provide, I would be happy to give you an indication if your present credentials appear to meet the minimum requirement for admission to our program. Further general information and requirements are available on the University's website for graduate studies located at http://web.utk.edu/~gsinfo/.
The steps necessary to formally apply, along with the graduate school application, can be found at this link:
http://www.bus.utk.edu/phd/onlineapp/marketing/admission.htm
There are essentially these steps:
- Graduate application with $35 US fee (application form at link)
- Transcripts (release form on line at link)
- Application to College of Business Doctor of Philosophy Programs (form at link)
- 4 letters of recommendation (form in multiple places at link)
- Application for graduate assistantship (form at link)
- GMAT scores sent directly (institution code 1843)
- TOEFL scores sent if appropriate (institution code 1843)
We normally take in 2 highly qualified individuals per year. We require an MBA or equivalent masters degree. The program is kept small purposely to provide students with close interaction with our faculty and fellow students. A profile of the last 3 years of accepted candidates would include the following:
GMAT average 635 (typical range 600 – 720)
MBA or equivalent masters GPA average 3.5
Work experience: 7 years
The process involves us making fairly early initial assessments of candidates in order to get to a short list by mid February each year for the following Fall semester. So I encourage you if you are interested in our program, to try to get all materials in, including GMAT scores by late Fall the year prior to your desired entry year and by mid-January at the latest.
The learning atmosphere is truly one of cooperation and collaboration. Faculty and doctoral students work together in an apprentice/mentoring relationship which creates a high level of learning and research productivity. Significant attention is also paid to supervised classroom teaching. I believe we offer a very exciting and rigorous training program for those interested in a scholarly career. I can honestly say that being an academic is a wonderful career, one that I enjoy thoroughly. The ability to convey one's knowledge through teaching, writing, and service, is consistently highly rewarding.
Again, I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Please feel free to contact me by email (dflint@utk.edu) or by phone (865) 974-8314.
Best regards,
Daniel J. Flint, Ph.D.
