Thank you for your interest in the Logistics Ph.D. Program.

Program Overview

Dr. Diane Mollenkopf is the director of this program.  We would be happy to answer any questions you have about the program, and we invite you to explore this website for additional information.  If you send us some initial information about yourself ( e.g., resume, previous GPAs, GMAT and TOEFL scores, research interests), we would be happy to give you an indication if your present credentials appear to meet the minimum requirement for admission to our program.  Further information and requirements are available on the University's website for graduate studies located at http://web.utk.edu/~gsinfo/.

This elite program of advanced study in the theory and development of the logistics discipline is a centerpiece of the Department of Marketing and Logistics.  The program links traditional areas of logistics research and development with faculty expertise in the areas of demand management and forecasting, logistics operations and modeling, logistics strategy, the development and management of relationships in the supply chain, integrating forward and reverse logistics activities, and environmental logistics/supply chain initiatives.

The learning atmosphere is truly one of cooperation and collaboration. Faculty and doctoral students work together in an apprenticeship / mentoring relationship.  Students benefit from a highly energized faculty that place significant emphasis on the value of Ph.D. education, and the benefits that the student, faculty, and university gain from these collaborative efforts.  We offer an exciting and rigorous training program for those interested in pursuing a scholarly career.  Sharing one’s knowledge and passion for learning through teaching, research and service offers a career path that is truly unmatched!

Application Process
We normally admit two students per year, with the program starting in early August.  Competitive applications are welcomed between September and January prior to each admission period.  The program is intentionally kept small (with a maximum of eight students at any point in time) to create close interaction with our research focused faculty, and to stimulate cross-functional relationships with students in other majors in the Ph.D. program.  It is important to recognize that each year the admission process is highly competitive, and the minimum criteria are a starting point for competitive positioning in the admission process.  Our general requirements include:

  • MBA or equivalent masters degree
    • average masters GPA of the current students in the program is a 3.5
  • Highly competitive GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) Score
    • average score of current students is 635 (ranging from 600-720)
    • GRE scores are NOT accepted as a substitute for the GMAT
  • Appropriate industry work experience (current students in the program average 8 years of industry experience).

The steps to formally apply, along with the graduate school application, can be found at this link:
http://www.bus.utk.edu/phd/onlineapp/logistics/admission.htm

The steps include:

  • Graduate application with $35 US fee (application form at link)
  • Transcripts (release form online at link)
  • Application to College of Business Doctor of Philosophy Programs (form at link)
  • 4 letters of recommendation (form in multiple places at link)
  • Application for graduate assistantship (form at link)
  • GMAT scores sent directly (institution code 1843)
  • TOEFL scores sent if appropriate (institution code 1843)

To insure timely review of your credentials, you are encouraged to have all materials submitted (and received) to both the Graduate School and College of Business Administration, including GMAT scores and recommendation letters, by the end of December the year prior to your desired entry year.  Our decision process involves a fairly early initial assessment of candidates in order to get to a short list by mid-February each year for the following Fall semester.

Again, thank you for your interest in our program. If you have further questions, you can contact either of us by e-mail or phone.  Our contact details are listed on the side-bar to the right.
