Dr. Crook holds three degrees. He earned a Bachelor of Science (Economics) from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL; an MBA (Finance and MIS) from American University in Washington, DC; and a PhD (Strategic Management and Supply Chain Management) from Florida State University.
Russell was born in Miami and raised in South Florida. He is married to Tamara Crook, who teaches accounting at UT, and they have three children – Russell, Spencer, and James. Besides Florida and Tennessee, Russell has lived in the D.C. area, Chapel Hill, NC, and Flagstaff, AZ.
Russell started with American Airlines right out of high school. He worked his way into management. He managed a group of 200 flight attendants for two years, and left to pursue his MBA. After earning his MBA, Russell started working for US Airways in their corporate headquarters (then across from Reagan National Airport). He worked as an analyst in Dining and Cabin Service. He then began working in strategic planning, where he assessed needs related to reservations and bookings. He was responsible for resource planning for 4,000 team members. Russell then went to work for IBM in procurement. He negotiated large scale (multimillion dollar) contracts with IBM’s contract manufacturers. He took a leave of absence to pursue his PhD. His first academic job was at Northern Arizona University. He left to pursue an opportunity here at UT, where he is today.
Interests
When he is not working, he enjoys boating, hiking, golfing, cooking, and football.
