Incorporating a Study Abroad Component in Courses

Right Float PhotoIncorporating a study abroad component to courses is not as difficult as some may think. There are numerous agencies that provide customized programs and services. These can help you arrange housing, travel, sightseeing trips, banquets, insurance, and trips to companies. The advantage of working with a provider is that for a very nominal fee they focus on logistics and provide you with ONE contract that covers all services. This leaves you free to focus on the academic side of the program. If you are not currently working with a provider, but would like to explore the possibility, contact the Programs Abroad Office and request a list of customized program providers.

The CIE (Center for International Education) also provides substantive assistance in establishing and implementing a study abroad component to a course and will be happy to meet and assist you in planning and development of your course.

In order to incorporate a study abroad component to a course at the University of Tennessee you must complete the form entitled “Program Plan for Leading a Course Abroad,” which is available from the Programs Abroad Office. The Programs Abroad Office is located at 1620 Melrose Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37996-3231. They can be contacted by calling 865/974-2168.

Please be aware that the University of Tennessee requires that you obtain contracts with all service providers including housing, facilities, food, transportation, etc. The CIE Accounting Clerk will work with you on all contracts and will be at your initial meeting with CIE staff to discuss your program, what you need, and how they can assist you.
