Dr. George A. Spiva was the Phillip Moffitt Distinguished Scholar in Economics at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville prior to his retirement in 1992. He was the recipient of an Alumni award as outstanding teacher at The University of Tennessee in 1987. During several leaves-of-absence, he has participated as a consultant or advisor in world-wide economic projects and programs in Indonesia, Peru, Greece, Australia and New Zealand. He was a consultant to an Asian Development Bank project in South Sumatra, Indonesia in 1987 and 1988. He spent six months in China in 2006 lecturing at Sichuan University and talking with Chinese bankers and businessmen.
Dr. Spiva comes from a banking background and served on the board of his family's bank in Missouri for several years. The bank was sold to the Mercantile Bank of St. Louis in 1984.
Dr. Spiva holds a B.S. Degree (Major in Marketing) and a M.A. Degree (Major in Economics) from the University of Missouri, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin. Dr. Spiva is a consultant to the U.S. Government and to Synovus Securities, a subsidiary of the Synovus Financial Corporation of Columbus, Georgia. Professor Spiva teaches introductory economics in the fall semester at UT; he appears occasionally on the A&E Channel and the History Channel on national TV. He speaks, Spanish, Indonesian and Malay.
