IN MEMORIUM

 Sidney L. Carroll
(1939-2012)

Our colleague, Sid Carroll passed away in Fairfax, Virginia on April 22, 2012.  He was 72.  Sid was born and grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana where he was born on December 27, 1939.   He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Louisiana State University and his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University.  He joined the faculty at Louisiana State University following his doctoral studies and moved to the Department of Economics, University of Tennessee in 1973.  He retired in 2002.  During his long career at Tennessee, he distinguished himself as an expert in the economics of the aircraft industry and the distribution of wealth in the United States.  He was reputed to be an expert badminton, poker and pool player, and known for his cultivation of grapes and azaleas.

Sid’s family requests, in lieu of flowers,  that donations be sent to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, www.blindness.org.  Condolences may be sent to his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Carroll, 2400 Clarendon Boulevard #201, Arlington, Virginia 22201.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.

UT Economist Matt Murray Tapped to Lead Baker Center

Research Rankings in Economics for University of Tennessee

Research rankings in Economics recently released by Tilburg University indicate that in 2010 [latest year available] the University of Tennessee ranked 50-59 among all U.S. universities and 26-33 among U.S. public universities.  Rankings are based on publications in 68 leading journals in economics, econometrics and finance selected by Tilburg University (Tilburg List) or subsets of this group of journals.

Jane Gravelle, Specialist in Economic Policy at the Congressional Research Service (CRS) was the guest speaker at the Knoxville Economics Forum held on April 20, 2012.

Laura Ullrich (UTK Ph.D. in Economics 2008) has been granted tenure and promotion to Associate Professor at Winthrop University.

William Neilson, Holly Chair of Excellence, was appointed as a Guest Professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Don Clark is currently serving as Executive Vice-President of the International Trade and Finance Association (ITFA).  He is organizing ITFA's 22nd international conference to be held in Pisa, Italy, over the May 23-26 period.

Economics Undergraduates Publish in Pursuit

In September, Larry Bray, research professor in the Department of Economics, appeared before the United States Congress as an acknowledged expert on US Inland Waterways. Bray spoke to the US House of Representatives’ Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment. His comments specifically dealt with the importance of commercial inland navigation to the US economy. More

Melanie Cozad, Ph.D. student in Economics, has been awarded a $10,000 State Farm Companies Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Award for 2011-2012.

Dr. Bill Fox has been appointed a Chancellor's Professor, the highest lifetime honor that can be accorded to a member of the faculty of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
