The College of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee is pleased to announce the acceptance of applications for the 2008 Business Education for Talented Students (BETS) Program. The Program dates are June 21-28, 2008.
What is the BETS? The BETS Program is a one-week residential program designed to introduce high school students from diverse backgrounds to the various fields of business (Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Economics, Human Resources Management, Public Administration, Enterprise Management, Logistics, and Statistics).
The program is designed to help students explore the dynamic world of business and business careers. Students will have an opportunity to participate in the preparation and presentation of a challenging team project. Additionally, the students will have opportunities to interact with diverse professionals from business and government, as well as visit and observe them in their work environment.
Who will teach the classes?Faculty members from the University of Tennessee’s College of Business Administration will teach each of the classes.
What other activities will students be involved? Students will attend classes, develop an executive presentation, visit a local company and shadow the professionals, interact with business students from the UT, and hear presentations from various professionals on campus (admissions, scholarship office, Office of Undergraduate Programs).
Who may apply? The BETS Program is open to under-represented (i.e., Native American, African American, Asian American, and Hispanic) or economically challenged high school students. These students must be starting their senior year (current juniors) in the fall of 2008. Twenty-five students will be selected from high schools in Knox County.
What is the cost? There is no cost to attend. Students selected to participate in the BETS Program will receive a full scholarship, which covers the cost of tuition, room and board, meals, books, supplies and transportation.
What are the requirements to apply? Students must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA, complete an application, submit a letter of recommendation, and show involvement in school, community and/or church activities. ACT/SAT test results are not required to participate in the program. Students applying to the BETS Program are not required to have taken a business course in high school. However, a student must have an interest in majoring in the business administration field.
When is the deadline? The application must be postmarked by May 16, 2008. Students will be notified of their acceptance within three weeks of the deadline.
Where will students reside?Students are required to live in the residence hall at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Campus to help students become familiar with the on-campus living environment.
Who will supervise the students? Students will be supervised by University Faculty, Staff, Administrators and trained college students.
