Edward J. Boling-2002 Distinguished Alumnus
For over 50 years, Ed Boling has been a devoted teacher, leader, friend, and fan of the University of Tennessee. His devotion began when he enrolled in the College of Business Administration to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in statistics. He subsequently was hired as a statistics instructor, but he left campus a few years later to hold various corporate and government posts. Ultimately, he followed his heart back to the University of Tennessee, becoming vice president of development in 1961. He became the university’s 17th president in 1970 and remained at the helm for 18 years—the longest term of service of any university president. Boling’s legacy of leadership includes a massive expansion of the Knoxville campus and the creation of a strong volunteer alumni and development program.
