Is your “Inner Entrepreneur” demanding to be set free? Do you want to join that elite group of individuals who have taken ideas and turned them into successful businesses; creating value, jobs, and considerable wealth in the process? If so, the University of Tennessee’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the College of Business Administration invites you to enter the 2nd Annual Business Plan Competition. With the mission to strengthen the entrepreneurial culture and spirit of the University, the competition allows participants to enhance their understanding of new venture creation, polish their communication skills by presenting ideas to investor/judges and networking with successful local entrepreneurs and venture capitalists.

The entrepreneur’s path is fraught with uncertainty and challenging decisions. An important step in minimizing the risks involved is the creation of a sound Business Plan. The entrepreneur’s Business Plan explores the challenges and opportunities, addresses the uncertainties, and in the end provides a roadmap to success.

The Competition

The 2009 Business Plan Competition is open to any undergraduate individual or team from any college within the University of Tennessee. The only requirements are that the team leader be enrolled in a UT degree program on the Knoxville campus and that the submission be the individual or team’s own original work and ideas. There will be awards in two categories: growth businesses and lifestyle businesses. Note the discussion of these different categories in the section titled “Growth or Lifestyle Business”.

Get Help with Your Plan

To help students with the creation of their plans, the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation will offer training sessions focusing on the “Concept Summary” and the development, content and construction of the business plan. The schedule and venue for these activities is shown in the Schedule of Events section of this document. Online resources and other reference material to help in creating a professional plan are recommended in the Resources section.
