LaPorte Gift Benefits Financial Learning in
UT College of Business Administration

KNOXVILLE, TN — Chris LaPorte and his wife Quinita have been longtime supporters of the University of Tennessee. Their most recent gift to UT’s College of Business Administration has significantly enhanced the capabilities of the college’s Investments Learning Center and its students’ financial learning.

The LaportesLaPorte’s gift allows the Investments Learning Center to lease an additional 10 Bloomberg terminals, bringing its total number of terminals to 12. The value of the benefits received by the university as a result of the LaPorte’s gift totals $600,000 over the next three years.   

“Having access to Bloomberg, the premier financial data software system used worldwide by investment professionals, is critical for our graduates,” said LaPorte. “Increasing the center’s capabilities to 12 terminals greatly expands the college’s ability to educate its students and allows them to earn the Bloomberg Global Product Certification, which is becoming increasingly important for individuals entering the financial investments arena.”

The college’s Investments Learning Center enhances financial education by providing cutting-edge experiential learning. For faculty and students interested in investment decision-making and portfolio management, the center offers a rare chance to gain valuable, hands-on experiences with data analysis.

The LaPortes are both originally from Tennessee, met at the University of Tennessee, and have resided in Houston, Texas, for the past 30 years. Chris earned two degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; his BS in 1975 and J.D. in 1978. His wife Quinita graduated from UT in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. They have financially supported UT’s College of Business Administration’s Finance Enrichment Fund, UT’s College of Law, and UT Athletics. Chris currently sits on the UT Development Council and is a member of the UT Foundation Board of Directors.

Several years ago, the LaPortes provided seed money for the College of Business Administration’s  LaPorte Torch Fund, which provides full-time MBA students the opportunity to compete with students managing the Haslam Torch Fund as they all gain valuable experience managing real-world portfolios of securities. The LaPortes, in conjunction with Chris’s three brothers Sam, Steve, and Joe and their families have contributed to UT Athletics by funding several improvements at LaPorte Stadium and Tom Black Track.  More recently, Chris and Quinita LaPorte and Sam and Marlowe LaPorte gifted the Katherine LaPorte classroom, named after their mother, in the college’s new James A Haslam II Business Building.

LaPorte’s latest gift is part of the Campaign for Tennessee, a $1 billion fundraising effort at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The LaPorte’s welcome the opportunity to give back to UT. “It is very inspiring and fulfilling to see what so many others have done to help further higher education on behalf of UT, and we are proud to be able to do our small part. We look forward to doing more in the future.”

The Campaign for Tennessee — the most ambitious effort in the university's 214-year history -- places UT among the ranks of the nation's largest public and private institutions that have sought this level of private support.

The campaign, which launched its silent phase in 2005, will secure private gifts that, in turn, will contribute substantially to the distinct, but linked, campuses comprised by the University of Tennessee system. Funds raised through the campaign will directly support the objectives of UT's strategic plan, as outlined by former UT President John Petersen. Among those objectives are improved student access and success, research and economic development, outreach and globalization.
