Beta Alpha Psi Goes to New York

Right Float PhotoPreparing our students to become successful professionals and business leaders is central to our educational mission.  In addition to a top-flight curriculum, the department supports the efforts of our Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) chapter to provide enrichment activities for its members.

A group of UT Beta Alpha Psi members traveled to New York City from March 26th through March 29th. Students, along with faculty members Dr. Jack Kiger and Mrs. Karyn Valades had a wonderful, whirlwind time traversing the city by subway, ferry, and foot.  Organized trip activities included touring the Foxwood Theater, touring the New York Stock Exchange, touring the NBC studio, visiting the Marriott Marquis for a presentation on how Marriott conducts their business, and visiting the PwC midtown office to hear firm members discuss managing their careers as NYC public accountants. Students also enjoyed walks along the Brooklyn Bridge, a Staten Island ferry ride, attending the Blue Man Group play, and touring the Grand Central Terminal.

Mrs. Valades, BAP Chapter Advisor, arranged two competitions for the students.  One of the competitions, “The NYC Subway Challenge”, involved roommates being given an envelope containing three pieces of paper detailing a task and destination where the task was to be completed.  Students had to navigate to the destination and complete the assigned tasks (e.g., go to FAO Schwartz and dance on the giant floor piano that appeared in the movie “BIG”.) They were required to record each task on film. The first pair to complete their three assigned tasks, Emily Prince and Molly Broome, won the competition. Their names will be displayed on a plaque outside of Mrs. Valades’ office.
