The 2011-2012 MAcc Class Travels to Washington D.C.

The University of Tennessee’s MAcc class of 81 students recently experienced the program’s annual trip to Washington D.C. Students and faculty visited the District from September 25-28. The trip’s itinerary is designed to highlight what students are learning in the classroom.

Dr. Joe Carcello arranged visits to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) and the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) for students in the audit concentration. During their visit to the SEC, students had the very rare opportunity to meet Mary Schapiro, SEC Chairperson. Mrs. Schapiro provided answers to a variety of student’s questions. Her answers included the details of her interview with President Barack Obama and a day in the life of SEC Chairperson. Other members of the Commission provided insight on the SEC investigation process of public companies and their role as a Commission.

Dr. LeAnn Luna scheduled visits with the Multistate Tax Commission and the National Taxpayer Advocate Service for students in the tax concentration. These students had the opportunity to inquire about tax law they are studying in class.

The class also participated in activities together. All students toured the U.S. Capitol, many for the first time. Congressman Oxley presented to the entire class during breakfast at their hotel, Hotel Palomar in Dupont Circle. The group also enjoyed lunches at the KPMG office and Capitol Hill Club.

The department values the educational experience this trip provides to our students. The trip supplements what they have learned in the classroom and exposes students to a historical part of the country that many have never visited.
