Internship Opportunities

Spring Accounting Internship Program

• We strongly urge you to attempt to interview with several firms before accepting an internship for the spring of your senior year. Prior to fall semester of your senior year, you need to identify the city in which you would like to start you career; that is the best city to have your internship. You also should decide which accounting area you would like to learn more about in your internship. About half of spring internships is taxation, over 40% is assurance services, and less than 10% is information systems.

• Spring internships are targeted primarily toward public accounting. The Career Services website for accounting spring internships is http://career.utk.edu/students/intern_acctguide.asp.

• In order to participate in Accounting Internship Interviews in September, you must be registered with Career Services.

• Student Orientation for accounting internship interviews usually is scheduled on the second Wednesday afternoon of the fall semester.

• Immediately following the Student Orientation, you are required to participate in the "Meet the Firms" reception from 5:15-7:00 PM. This is your opportunity to talk with recruiters informally and help you determine firms to whom you want to submit resumes. Wear appropriate business attire and bring copies of your resume.

• You must submit your resume (to each firm you want to consider you) through Career Services' Web program in early September.

• Employers will provide Career Services with a list of students they want to interview. In mid-September you may sign up for interview times on the Web (with firms that have selected you).

• Should you desire a "mock interview," you need to contact Career Services to sign up for a time in mid-September. The interview will be videotaped and critiqued.

• When you accept an internship offer, you must inform Dr. Lee Hendrick in the Accounting Department and Ms. DeAnna Bonner in Career Services (974-5435). Questions concerning academic credit should be directed to Dr. Hendrick before you leave the campus for your internship.

• To maintain your full-time student status during your internship, you need to contact Ms. Bonner, Career Services, 100 Dunford Hall for additional information. If you fail to do so, you will no longer be considered a full-time student at the University which may result in problems with pre-registration, housing, financial aid, etc.

• The campus interviews usually take place in the last full week in September. Many large firms will require an office interview as well in October or November.

Summer Accounting Internship Program

• Summer internships are targeted primarily toward industry although some CPA firms offer internships during summer as well as spring. Most CPA firms interview on campus once each year, during fall. Hence, students seeking a summer internship with a CPA firm should apply in fall before the summer for which they are seeking an internship. Also, CPA firms expect interns to be within 12 to 15 months of meeting the requirements to sit for the CPA exam when interning.

• During November, students will meet with Dr. Kiger to discuss the process of getting an internship and attend a Resume Preparation workshop at Career Services.

• During January students will submit to Dr. Kiger a copy of their resume for each firm they wish to consider them. Students also attend an Interviewing Workshop and participate in a Mock Interview conducted by Career Services.

• Firms select students they wish to interview.

• Interviews normally occur during the last two weeks of February at Career

• When you receive an internship offer, you are expected to inform Dr. Jack Kiger in the Department of Accounting and Information Management. Also, when you accept an internship offer, you are expected to inform Dr. Kiger.

• Questions concerning academic credit should be directed to Dr. Hendrick before you leave the campus for your internship.

• To maintain your full-time student status during an internship other than summer, you need to contact Ms. Bonner, Career Services, 100 Dunford Hall for additional information. If you fail to do so, you will no longer be considered a full-time student at the University which may result in problems with pre-registration, housing, financial aid, etc.
